The Story so Far:
With the closure of the Kashmir Klub in May 2003 the question on everyones lips was 'what next for it's organisers Christian Barnes and Tony Moore?
What was inevitable was that there would be two premium live music
platforms from which artistes could launch themselves and where music
lovers and industry bods could revel in a top atmosphere.
Eighteen months on and the prophecy has certainly come through. The Bedford in Balham is holding the fort south of the river and Christian is flying high as the driving force behind 4 sticks live, arguably the best showcase London has ever seen.
So how did we arrive here?
Christian didn't let the grass grow under his feet when early retirement
beckoned in 2003. He soon hooked up again with Dave Dix who created the great sound of the Kashmir Klub, and fellow promoter Alistair Sodeye an old friend from retro bar ( portobello ). They approached the management at The Cobden Club with a business plan based around promoting live music. The Cobden agreed to give free reign of the hall every Monday and Tuesday night and for a year, the 'Retrolive' showcase more than held its own, boasting regular performances by the likes of Amy Winehouse and Jamie Scott and a talented compere in Barbadian Alex Jordan.
It was clear that things were starting to fall into place but it wasn't quite there yet. In July 04, Christian and Alistair made the decision to promote separately. Then came the welcome news of a refurb and new PA at the Cobden, which was much needed. Christian has since worked hard, and continues to work hard to coordinate the availability of music's most promising live acts, along with more than a few who have long since put pen to paper.
Recent highlights have included soul singer J'Nay who is signed to Island Records, The Rosie (daughter of Bill) Oddy band and singer songwriters Tom Baxter and Sonna Rele. The name 4 Sticks live derives from a Led Zeppelin song (Led Zeppelin IV). It represents the start of a song and therefore represents the anticipation of something beautiful, what this is all about, the music.
